Synopsis
A NÔ AMOURS stages two passionate dramas, adapted from two of the Five Modern Noh plays by Yukio Mishima, translated by Marguerite Yourcenar: AOI and HANJO.
AOI tells the story of a young woman haunted by the ghost of her husband's former lover. Mishima adapted, in a modern environment, the story of a Noh play dating from the 15th century, itself adapted from the Tale of Genji, considered the first novel in History, which was written by a woman of the Heian court, Murasaki Shikibu in the 11th century. We find the characters of AOI, the innocent princess, the handsome prince Hikaru Genji and the jealous Mrs. Rokujo... HANJO is also adapted from an ancient Noh and tells the story of a young geisha who has gone mad following the departure of the man she loved, whose return she has been waiting for three years. She was taken in by a 40-year-old painter, fascinated by the beauty of this young woman and by her wait.
Our creation makes some allusions to Noh and Japanese culture, but our aim is to highlight the universal nature of human passions and to simply tell these stories of women in love by making concrete the very poetic language of Yukio Mishima in the magnificent translation by Marguerite Yourcenar.
